As mob holds judicial officers hostage in Malda’s Kaliachak, read how Muslims resorted to anti-Hindu riots in 2016 at the same place over Kamlesh Tiwari’s “blasphemy”
The 2016 Malda riots saw a massive protest against Kamlesh Tiwari’s remarks turn into widespread violence.

In the tense atmosphere of Kaliachak in Malda district, where judicial officers were recently held hostage by a mob, memories of the 2016 Malda riots resurface. These riots, which erupted in the same location, marked one of West Bengal's most violent episodes, highlighting the volatile nature of communal tensions in the region.
The 2016 unrest began on January 3rd when thousands of Muslims gathered in Kaliachak to protest against controversial remarks made by political figure Kamlesh Tiwari. The rally, which had been granted permission and organized by Muslim groups, aimed to demand strict punishment for Tiwari. Initially, the protest appeared peaceful, with participants demanding justice. However, the situation quickly escalated as a section of the crowd grew increasingly aggressive.
Barricades were breached, and clashes erupted between the protesters and the police and security forces. Within a matter of hours, the protest had transformed into a full-blown riot. The Muslim mob targeted the Kaliachak police station, vandalizing offices and setting vehicles ablaze. The block development office was ransacked, with government records, computers, and files being destroyed. Police personnel were chased away as the mob seized control of the premises. Over 30 policemen were injured during these violent clashes.
The violence did not confine itself to government buildings. Protesters moved towards Khaltipur railway station, where they blocked railway tracks, causing significant disruption to train services. National Highway 34 was also affected, with vehicles stranded after an NBSTC bus was set on fire. Passengers were forced to abandon their vehicles to ensure their safety as the mob turned destructive. Shops shut down, roads were blocked, and daily life in the region came to a standstill. Fear spread across nearby areas, prompting many to stay indoors.
Reports of targeted attacks on Hindu properties further intensified the unrest. The riots underscored the deep-seated communal tensions in the area, with violence fueled by religious and political sentiments. The incident served as a stark reminder of the fragile balance in the region, where even a peaceful protest could rapidly spiral into chaos.
The 2016 Malda riots left a lasting impact on the community, with the aftermath of the recent hostage situation in Kaliachak serving as a chilling reminder of the region's history of communal violence. As tensions once again rise in the area, the events of 2016 highlight the need for careful management of such situations to prevent further escalation and protect the safety and security of all residents.
