Artemis II Astronauts Name Moon Crater After Carroll, Reid Wiseman’s Late Wife

The Artemis II astronauts have named a moon crater after Carroll Wiseman, the late wife of mission specialist Reid Wiseman, in a poignant tribute during their historic mission. The emotional moment unfolded as the crew shared their decision with mission control and the family of the beloved Houston resident, who passed away in 2020 due to cancer.

Reid Wiseman, a veteran astronaut with extensive experience in space, has been a key member of the Artemis II mission, which marked the first crewed flight around the Moon since the Apollo era. As the spacecraft Orion traveled through the lunar orbit, the crew members took a rare opportunity to honor Carroll Wiseman's memory by naming a crater in her honor. The decision was made in consultation with NASA's lunar nomenclature committee, ensuring that the crater's name would be officially recognized and recorded in lunar geography.

Carroll Wiseman, a dedicated educator and community leader, left a lasting impact on the Houston area. Her passion for science and education inspired generations of students, and her legacy continues to be celebrated by her family and friends. Reid Wiseman, who has spent much of his career in space, often spoke of the support and love Carroll provided during his long absences. The naming of the crater is a heartfelt gesture that acknowledges her contributions and the profound influence she had on her husband's life.

The emotional exchange between the crew and the Wiseman family was captured by mission control, providing a poignant reminder of the personal connections that astronauts maintain with those they leave behind on Earth. As the crew members orbited the Moon, they were reminded of the loved ones who supported them in their pursuit of space exploration. The decision to name the crater after Carroll Wiseman was a way for the astronauts to carry her memory with them on this historic journey.

NASA has long had a tradition of honoring individuals and events through lunar nomenclature. The naming of craters, ridges, and other geological features on the Moon is a way to preserve the history and achievements of humanity. By naming a crater after Carroll Wiseman, the Artemis II crew has added a personal touch to this tradition, ensuring that her story will be remembered for generations to come.

The Artemis II mission, which concluded with the safe return of the crew to Earth, was a significant milestone in space exploration. The naming of the crater after Carroll Wiseman serves as a poignant reminder of the human element that drives space missions. It is a testament to the love, sacrifice, and support that families provide to astronauts as they venture into the unknown.

As the crew reflects on their journey, the decision to name the crater after Carroll Wiseman will undoubtedly be a source of comfort and inspiration. It is a way for the astronauts to honor the memory of a beloved individual and to connect with the emotional ties that bind them to Earth. In naming the crater, the Artemis II crew has left a lasting tribute to Carroll Wiseman, ensuring that her story will be etched in the annals of lunar history.

A simple way to get more value from metrics
A simple way to get more value from metrics
We spent one day 1 building a system that immediately found a mid 7 figure optimization (which ended up shipping). In the first year, we shipped mid 8 figures per year worth of cost savings as a result. The key feature this system introduces is the ability to query metrics data across all hosts and all services and over any period of time (since inception), so we've called it LongTermMetrics (LTM) internally since I like boring, descriptive, names. This got started when I was looking for a starter project that would both help me understand the Twitter infra stack and also have some easily quantifiable value. Andy Wilcox suggested looking at JVM survivor space utilization for some large services. If you're not familiar with what survivor space is, you can think of it as a configurable, fixed-size buffer, in the JVM (at least if you use the GC algorithm that's default at Twitter). At the time, if you looked at a random large services, you'd usually find that either: The buffer was too small, resulting in poor performance, sometimes catastrophically poor when under high load. The buffer was too large, resulting in wasted memory, i.e., wasted money. But instead of looking at random services, there's no fundamental reason that we shouldn't be able to query all services and get a list of which services have room for improvement in their configuration, sorted by performance degradation or cost savings. And if we write that query for JVM survivor space, this also

Context Engineering for Coding Agents
The number of options we have to configure and enrich a coding agent’s context has exploded over the past few months. Claude Code is leading the charge with innovations in this space, but other coding assistants are quickly following suit.
