The Artemis 2 Moon Mission: A Crab Cake Delight Followed by a Lunar Orbit

As the crew of NASA's Artemis 2 Moon mission prepared for a historic journey, they shared a glimpse into their daily life aboard the spacecraft. In a short video broadcast on the eve of their mission, the astronauts revealed the details of their meal plans and sent a festive greeting to Earth.

The crew's schedule is packed with scientific experiments and technical tasks, but they also found time to prepare a special feast. Among the dishes they prepared was a crab cake, a popular dish from the Chesapeake Bay region in the United States. The astronauts explained that they had chosen this dish not only for its taste but also because it represents the connection between Earth and space. The crab, sourced from the ocean, symbolizes the vastness of our planet, while the lunar environment highlights the challenges of sustaining life in space.

In addition to the crab cake, the crew shared their menu plans, which included a variety of nutritious and calorie-dense foods. These meals are designed to provide the astronauts with the necessary energy and nutrients to perform their duties during the mission. The menu also includes a range of fruits, vegetables, and protein sources, all carefully selected to meet the specific dietary requirements of the crew.

As they prepared for their lunar orbit, the astronauts took a moment to reflect on the significance of their mission. They acknowledged the importance of this journey in advancing human exploration and understanding of the Moon. The Artemis program aims to establish a sustainable presence on the lunar surface, paving the way for future missions to Mars and other celestial bodies.

In their video message, the crew also sent warm regards to their families, colleagues, and the global community. They expressed their excitement about the opportunity to contribute to humanity's quest for knowledge and exploration. The video concluded with a heartfelt wish for peace and unity on Earth, emphasizing the shared responsibility of all people to protect and preserve our planet.

The Artemis 2 mission marks a significant milestone in space exploration. As the crew orbits the Moon, they are not only testing the capabilities of the Orion spacecraft but also pushing the boundaries of human endurance and scientific discovery. Their journey serves as a reminder of the potential of humanity to reach for the stars and leave a lasting impact on the universe.

In the coming days, the crew will continue to conduct experiments and gather data on the lunar environment. They will also document their experiences and observations, providing valuable insights for future missions. As they complete their orbit, the astronauts will return to Earth, bringing with them a renewed sense of purpose and a deeper understanding of our place in the cosmos.

The Artemis 2 mission is more than just a test of technology; it is a testament to the human spirit and our relentless pursuit of knowledge. The crew's crab cake feast and heartfelt message to Earth highlight the balance between the mundane and the extraordinary in space exploration. As they orbit the Moon, they are not only celebrating their achievements but also inspiring future generations to dream big and reach for the stars.

A simple way to get more value from metrics
A simple way to get more value from metrics
We spent one day 1 building a system that immediately found a mid 7 figure optimization (which ended up shipping). In the first year, we shipped mid 8 figures per year worth of cost savings as a result. The key feature this system introduces is the ability to query metrics data across all hosts and all services and over any period of time (since inception), so we've called it LongTermMetrics (LTM) internally since I like boring, descriptive, names. This got started when I was looking for a starter project that would both help me understand the Twitter infra stack and also have some easily quantifiable value. Andy Wilcox suggested looking at JVM survivor space utilization for some large services. If you're not familiar with what survivor space is, you can think of it as a configurable, fixed-size buffer, in the JVM (at least if you use the GC algorithm that's default at Twitter). At the time, if you looked at a random large services, you'd usually find that either: The buffer was too small, resulting in poor performance, sometimes catastrophically poor when under high load. The buffer was too large, resulting in wasted memory, i.e., wasted money. But instead of looking at random services, there's no fundamental reason that we shouldn't be able to query all services and get a list of which services have room for improvement in their configuration, sorted by performance degradation or cost savings. And if we write that query for JVM survivor space, this also

Context Engineering for Coding Agents
The number of options we have to configure and enrich a coding agent’s context has exploded over the past few months. Claude Code is leading the charge with innovations in this space, but other coding assistants are quickly following suit. Powerful context engineering is becoming a huge part of the developer experience of these tools. Birgitta Böckeler explains the current state of context configuration features, using Claude Code as an example. more…

What does less protein and nitrogen mean for methane?
Does feeding less protein to cows over a longer period not only reduce nitrogen losses, but also affect methane emissions? Researchers at Wageningen University & Research (WUR) investigated this in a multi-year study with dairy cows, funded by the Vereniging Diervoederonderzoek Nederland (VDN), the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security and Nature (LVVN), and […] The post What does less protein and nitrogen mean for methane? appeared first on Agriland.ie .
