In the rapidly evolving world of science, the pursuit of groundbreaking discoveries often requires a unique blend of creativity, courage, and the freedom to explore unconventional paths. This is where the Aramont Fellowship Fund for Emerging Science Research comes in, providing essential support for early-career faculty and postdoctoral scholars across Harvard University. This year, a renewed gift has significantly expanded the impact of this invaluable program, enabling a new cohort of young scientists to tackle high-risk, high-reward research across the life and physical sciences, engineering, and medicine.

The Aramont Fellowship Fund was established in 2017 with the vision of catalyzing discoveries that occur when researchers have the freedom to pursue unconventional paths. The fund supports early-career scientists at HarvardтАЩs Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Harvard Medical School, the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, and the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. To date, the program has supported 30 early-career scientists, each bringing fresh perspectives and innovative ideas to their respective fields.

In response to the urgent need for research support after federal funding cuts, a generous new gift has doubled the size of this yearтАЩs cohort compared to the previous year. The 10 awardees are pursuing urgent research priorities across all four schools, each project promising to make a significant impact in their respective fields.

One of the projects supported by the Aramont Fellowships is the study of dogs to identify brain biomarkers that can shed light on human health. By examining the complex neural networks of canines, researchers aim to uncover insights into the human brain that could lead to breakthroughs in neuroscience and medicine. Another project focuses on probing wastewater to detect cancer risk across communities. This innovative approach not only highlights the potential of environmental data but also underscores the importance of interdisciplinary research in addressing public health challenges.

In addition to these projects, the Aramont Fellowships are also supporting research into the hidden immune targets that viruses work hardest to conceal. By uncovering these targets, scientists hope to develop more effective antiviral therapies and prevent the rapid evolution of viruses, which has been a significant challenge in recent years. Furthermore, the fellowships are funding the development of methods to convert carbon dioxide into valuable chemicals using renewable electricity. This research has the potential to revolutionize energy production and contribute to a more sustainable future.

This yearтАЩs new fellows and their supported projects include тАЬThe Physics of Intelligence: Linking Neural Representations and AI Safety and AlignmentтАЭ led by SueYeon Chung, an assistant professor of physics and applied mathematics at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. ChungтАЩs research aims to bridge the gap between the study of neural representations and the development of AI systems that can operate safely and ethically in the real world.

The Aramont Fellowships are not only providing financial support but also fostering a culture of innovation and collaboration among early-career scientists. By empowering these researchers to take risks and explore new frontiers, the program is helping to shape the future of science and technology. We spent one day 1 building a system that immediately found a mid 7 figure optimization (which ended up shipping). In the first year, we shipped mid 8 figures per year worth of cost savings as a result. The key feature this system introduces is the ability to query metrics data across all hosts and all services and over any period of time (since inception), so we've called it LongTermMetrics (LTM) internally since I like boring, descriptive, names. This got started when I was looking for a starter project that would both help me understand the Twitter infra stack and also have some easily quantifiable value. Andy Wilcox suggested looking at JVM survivor space utilization for some large services. If you're not familiar with what survivor space is, you can think of it as a configurable, fixed-size buffer, in the JVM (at least if you use the GC algorithm that's default at Twitter). At the time, if you looked at a random large services, you'd usually find that either: The buffer was too small, resulting in poor performance, sometimes catastrophically poor when under high load. The buffer was too large, resulting in wasted memory, i.e., wasted money. But instead of looking at random services, there's no fundamental reason that we shouldn't be able to query all services and get a list of which services have room for improvement in their configuration, sorted by performance degradation or cost savings.
