Apple says payments fully blocked in Russia following government diktat [U]

Apple has announced that all payment processing in Russia has been fully halted, rendering it impossible for local residents to make app purchases or renew subscriptions to Apple services. This development, which includes subscriptions to iCloud+ and Apple TV, follows a directive from the Russian government and marks the closure of a loophole that previously allowed customers to make indirect payments to Apple.

The decision to block payments in Russia comes amidst mounting pressure from the Kremlin, which has sought to restrict access to foreign services and technologies. Apple's move to cease payment processing in the country is a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between the tech giant and the Russian government.

Prior to this announcement, Russian users had been able to bypass the restrictions by using alternative payment methods, such as third-party services or cryptocurrencies, to make purchases from the App Store or renew subscriptions to Apple services. However, the company has now closed this loophole, ensuring that all transactions are directly processed through its systems.

The shutdown of payment processing in Russia is expected to have a significant impact on Apple's business operations in the region. The company has a substantial user base in the country, and the inability to make purchases or renew subscriptions could lead to a decline in revenue and user satisfaction.

Apple's decision to comply with the Russian government's directive highlights the challenges faced by tech companies operating in politically unstable regions. While the company has prioritized its relationship with the Kremlin, it may face backlash from its Russian customers and potentially harm its reputation as a provider of reliable services.

The move also underscores the growing tensions between Russia and the global tech industry. As the Russian government continues to impose restrictions on foreign services, companies like Apple are forced to navigate a delicate balance between complying with local regulations and maintaining access to their user base.

In the long term, Apple's decision to halt payments in Russia could have broader implications for the tech industry. Other companies may be forced to reconsider their operations in the region, potentially leading to a decline in the availability of international services and technologies in the country.

Despite the challenges posed by the Russian government, Apple remains committed to providing its services to users around the world. The company has not yet announced any plans to withdraw from the Russian market, but the recent decision to block payments is a clear indication of the difficulties it faces in operating in the region.

As the situation continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how Apple and other tech companies adapt to the changing landscape in Russia. The company's ability to navigate these complex political waters will be crucial in maintaining its presence and reputation in the region.

UI backwards compatibility
UI backwards compatibility
About once a month, an app that I regularly use will change its UI in a way that breaks muscle memory, basically tricking the user into doing things they don’t want. Zulip In recent memory, Zulip (a slack competitor) changed its newline behavior so that ctrl + enter sends a message instead of inserting a new line. After this change, I sent a number of half-baked messages and it seemed like some other people did too. Around the time they made that change, they made another change such that a series of clicks that would cause you to send a private message to someone would instead cause you to send a private message to the alphabetically first person who was online. Most people didn’t notice that this was a change, but when I mentioned that this had happened to me a few times in the past couple weeks, multiple people immediately said that the exact same thing happened to them. Some people also mentioned that the behavior of navigation shortcut keys was changed in a way that could cause people to broadcast a message instead of sending a private message. In both cases, some people blamed themselves and didn’t know why they’d just started making mistakes that caused them to send messages to the wrong place. Doors A while back, I was at Black Seed Bagel, which has a door that looks 75% like a “push” door from both sides when it’s actually a push door from the outside and
