Amazon EC2 Hpc8a Instances powered by 5th Gen AMD EPYC processors are now available
Amazon EC2 Hpc8a instances, powered by 5th Gen AMD EPYC processors, deliver up to 40% higher performance, increased memory bandwidth, and 300 Gbps Elastic Fabric Adapter networking, helping customers accelerate compute-intensive simulations, engineering workloads, and tightly coupled HPC applications.

Amazon has announced the general availability of its new EC2 Hpc8a instances, which are powered by the latest 5th Generation AMD EPYC processors. These instances are designed to deliver up to 40% higher performance, increased memory bandwidth, and 300 Gbps Elastic Fabric Adapter (EFA) networking, making them ideal for customers who need to accelerate compute-intensive simulations, engineering workloads, and tightly coupled HPC applications.
The Hpc8a instances are optimized for high-performance computing (HPC) workloads, including computational fluid dynamics, simulations for faster design iterations, high-resolution weather modeling within tight operational windows, and complex crash simulations that require rapid time-to-results. By leveraging the 5th Generation AMD EPYC processors with a maximum frequency of up to 4.5 GHz, these instances offer significant improvements over previous generations.
In addition to the enhanced performance, the Hpc8a instances provide 42% greater memory bandwidth and up to 25% better price-performance compared to the Hpc7a instances. This makes them an attractive option for customers looking to scale their compute-intensive simulation workloads efficiently while reducing job completion times.
The Hpc8a instances are available in a single 96xlarge size with a 1:4 core-to-memory ratio, featuring 192 cores, 768 GiB of memory, and 300 Gbps EFA networking. This configuration is designed to support applications requiring high levels of inter-node communications at scale. Customers can further customize the number of cores needed at launch to right-size their instances based on specific workload requirements.
Another key feature of the Hpc8a instances is their use of sixth-generation AWS Nitro cards. These cards offload CPU virtualization, storage, and networking functions to dedicated hardware and software, thereby enhancing performance and security for workloads. This technology ensures that customers can take full advantage of the high core density, memory bandwidth, and low-latency networking provided by the Hpc8a instances.
To simplify workload submission and cluster creation, customers can use the Hpc8a instances with AWS ParallelCluster and AWS Parallel Computing Service (AWS PCS). These services provide a streamlined approach to managing and deploying HPC workloads on the new instances. Additionally, the instances can be paired with Amazon FSx for Lustre, which offers sub-millisecond latencies and up to hundreds of gigabytes per second (GB/s) of throughput, further optimizing performance for large-scale data-intensive applications.
In summary, the new EC2 Hpc8a instances, powered by 5th Generation AMD EPYC processors, represent a significant advancement in HPC capabilities for AWS customers. With their enhanced performance, memory bandwidth, and networking, these instances are well-suited for accelerating compute-intensive simulations, engineering workloads, and tightly coupled HPC applications, enabling customers to achieve faster time-to-results and greater efficiency in their operations.
