Alcohol, loud DJ on Varanasi’s Ganga during Shobha Yatra, no action yet

In the sacred city of Varanasi, on the banks of the Ganga River, a recent incident has sparked controversy and raised questions about the respect for religious sentiments. Videos circulating on social media show a group of men allegedly consuming alcohol and dancing to loud DJ music on a boat passing through the holy waters during the Shobha Yatra, a religious procession organized by the Manjhi community.

The Manjhi community, classified as Dalits under the Scheduled Tribe (ST), traditionally organizes the Shobha Yatra following the Chaitra Navratri festival. This procession starts from the Shitala Ghat, passes by the shrine of Choti Shitala Mata, and continues to Mirzapur, where participants stay overnight before returning the next day. However, the recent videos captured on the Ganga River have raised concerns about the inappropriate behavior of some individuals during this sacred event.

The videos, which have gone viral, depict a shirtless man drinking beer while loud music plays in the background. In another video, a cluster of boats is seen passing through the ghats to the rhythm of the music. The Varanasi police are currently investigating the incident, with Assistant Commissioner of Police Varanasi stating that efforts are underway to identify the individuals featured in the videos.

Despite the controversy, the ACP did not address whether the incident had hurt religious sentiments, instead focusing on the ongoing investigation. This situation is particularly striking given that similar incidents, such as the arrest of 14 Muslim youth for breaking Ramzan fasts with non-vegetarian food on the holy waters, have been swiftly addressed. The youth were apprehended following the virality of the incident and a complaint filed by the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha.

The contrasting responses to these incidents have raised questions about the enforcement of religious sentiments and the application of laws. While the Muslim youth were quickly arrested, the ongoing investigation into the alcohol and loud music incident on the Ganga River has yet to yield any actionable results. This has led to debates about the equal treatment of religious communities and the need for a more consistent approach to upholding religious sentiments.

As the investigation continues, the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of respecting religious traditions and the sacred nature of the Ganga River. The Ganga, often referred to as the "mother of rivers," holds immense spiritual significance for millions of Hindus, and any disrespect shown towards it during religious events can lead to widespread outrage and calls for action.

In the meantime, the viral videos have highlighted the need for greater awareness and sensitivity among individuals participating in religious processions. Such events are meant to bring people together in a spirit of devotion and harmony, and any actions that undermine these values should be addressed promptly and effectively.

As the Varanasi police work to identify those involved in the incident, the broader question of how to balance individual freedoms with the preservation of religious sentiments remains unanswered. The incident serves as a stark reminder that the sacred spaces of religious events must be protected, and that all communities have a responsibility to uphold the values and traditions that are dear to them.
