Bharti Airtel has secured a $1 billion equity infusion for its data centre arm, Nxtra Data, from a consortium led by Alpha Wave Global, with participation from The Carlyle Group, Anchorage Capital, and Airtel itself. This significant investment is aimed at accelerating Nxtra's expansion of large-scale and edge data centres to serve enterprises, hyperscalers, and government customers across India.
Under the terms of the transaction, Alpha Wave Global will contribute $435 million, The Carlyle Group will invest $240 million, Anchorage Capital will provide $35 million, and Airtel will contribute the remaining amount. The final investor stakes will be subject to post-closing adjustments and customary approvals. According to reports, the deal values Nxtra at approximately $3.1 billion, with Airtel remaining the controlling shareholder.
The capital raised from this investment will primarily be used for capacity expansion. Nxtra plans to grow its current capacity of around 300 MW to a targeted 1 GW, aiming to control roughly a quarter of India's data centre market. The expansion will focus on both large-scale and edge facilities, ensuring that Nxtra can meet the growing demands of its diverse customer base.
Headquartered in New Delhi, Nxtra currently operates 14 major data centres and more than 120 edge facilities across India. The company has recently opened new data centres in Pune and is actively developing AI-ready campuses in Chennai, Mumbai, and Kolkata. These new facilities will further enhance Nxtra's ability to provide cutting-edge solutions and services to its clients.
The deal is subject to typical regulatory approvals, which are expected to be obtained in due course. This investment underscores Airtel's commitment to strengthening its position in the data centre market and its ambition to become a leading provider of data centre solutions in India.
Nxtra's expansion will benefit from the growing demand for data centre services in India, driven by the increasing digital footprint of enterprises, the rise of hyperscale cloud providers, and the need for robust data infrastructure among government entities. With this significant investment, Nxtra is well-positioned to meet these growing demands and solidify its position as a key player in the Indian data centre market.
In conclusion, the $1 billion equity infusion for Nxtra Data marks a strategic move by Airtel and its partners to accelerate the growth of data centre infrastructure in India. This investment will enable Nxtra to expand its capacity and enhance its offerings, catering to the diverse needs of its clients and positioning the company as a leader in the data centre sector. As Nxtra continues to build and innovate, it will play a crucial role in shaping the future of digital infrastructure in India.
