AI is here to stay, but it may not be the comms productivity engine we were promised

As the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into the communications industry continues to grow, the expectations surrounding its transformative potential are being tempered by practical realities. According to Ragan’s 2026 Communications Benchmark Report, which surveyed nearly 900 professionals across various sectors, AI is not living up to the hype as a panacea for communication productivity. The report, set to be fully unveiled at Ragan’s Employee Communications & Culture Conference in Boston on April 21-23, offers a nuanced view of AI adoption and its impact on the industry.

While the majority of respondents (55%) recognize the importance of AI and technology skills for career advancement, communicators are increasingly acknowledging the limitations of AI. When asked about allocating additional communications budget, 43% expressed a preference for hiring more human staff, underscoring the enduring value of human expertise. This preference highlights that, despite AI’s efficiency gains, the unique insights and creativity of human professionals remain indispensable.

For those who are experiencing time savings through AI, the additional freed-up resources are being utilized in various ways. The most common outcome is the creation of more content, with nearly half (49%) of communicators reporting that AI is aiding in this process. This shift not only reflects the ability of AI to streamline existing tasks but also signals a potential reallocation of resources towards content generation.

Interestingly, only 5% of communicators have reported reducing headcount as a result of AI adoption. This figure suggests that AI is not being used as a tool for downsizing but rather as an opportunity to reconfigure teams and enhance strategic value. The remaining communicators, who are not experiencing time savings from AI, may be due to inefficient or limited use of the technology within their organizations.

Despite the challenges, there is still a notable appetite for AI-related investments. Twenty-one percent of respondents indicated a desire for additional AI training, reflecting a growing recognition of the need for human-AI collaboration. Similarly, 13% expressed interest in acquiring new AI tools, indicating that while the hype may be waning, the interest in AI technology remains.

The complex picture painted by the 2026 Communications Benchmark Report suggests that AI will continue to play a role in the communications industry, but its impact may not be as revolutionary as initially anticipated. As communicators navigate the nuances of AI adoption, the focus will likely shift from relying on AI as a standalone solution to leveraging it as a supportive tool. This shift will require a balanced approach that integrates human expertise with technological advancements, ensuring that the industry continues to evolve while maintaining the value that human professionals bring.

In conclusion, the findings from Ragan’s report underscore the importance of a measured perspective on AI’s role in the communications industry. While AI undoubtedly offers efficiency benefits, it is not a silver bullet for productivity. The continued success of communicators will depend on their ability to harness AI’s potential while recognizing the irreplaceable contributions of human ingenuity and creativity. As the industry moves forward, the focus will likely be on optimizing AI integration and ensuring that it complements rather than diminishes the unique strengths of human professionals.
