Agratas advances 20 GWh battery plant in western India

Agratas, the global battery business division of the Tata Group, has achieved a significant milestone in its battery manufacturing project in Sanand, western India. The company has completed the steel frame of its facility, marking a critical step toward operational readiness. With production slated to begin in 2027, this development underscores the company's commitment to establishing a robust battery manufacturing presence in the region.

The Sanand facility, which is being developed as part of Agratas' strategic expansion plan, will focus on producing advanced battery cells for electric vehicles (EVs) and energy storage applications. The first phase of the project is designed to achieve an annual production capacity of 20 GWh, positioning it as one of the largest battery manufacturing facilities in the world.

Deepak Khare, vice president of manufacturing operations at Agratas, highlighted the importance of this achievement. "Completing the steel frame represents an important step in our progress toward operational readiness," he stated. "Our focus now is on developing systems, processes, and capabilities to deliver batteries manufactured in India for global markets, while also building a skilled workforce to support safe and high-quality production."

The steel structure, which spans 700 meters in length and 150 meters in width, reaches a maximum height of 34 meters and covers a built-up area of 105,000 square meters. The construction required more than 24,000 tonnes of steel, with associated buildings being developed in parallel. At its peak, the project saw over 2,500 skilled workers actively involved in the construction process.

The project is being executed by Tata Projects Ltd., in collaboration with Tata Consulting Engineers and multiple steel contractors. This joint effort has ensured the smooth progress of the facility's construction, despite the complexities involved in setting up a large-scale battery manufacturing plant.

The completion of the steel frame is not just a technical achievement but also a testament to the dedication and hard work of the team involved in the project. It signifies the company's ability to navigate the challenges of the global battery manufacturing landscape and position itself as a key player in the industry.

As the facility moves closer to its operational phase, Agratas is expected to contribute significantly to the growth of the EV and energy storage markets in India and beyond. The production of high-quality batteries in the country will not only boost domestic demand but also enable the company to meet the increasing global demand for sustainable energy solutions.

Moreover, the establishment of this facility will create numerous job opportunities, both directly and indirectly, further strengthening the local economy. The project's success will also reinforce India's position as a strategic hub for battery manufacturing, positioning the country as a global leader in the renewable energy sector.

In conclusion, Agratas' completion of the steel frame for its Sanand battery manufacturing facility is a significant milestone that underscores the company's ambition to become a leading player in the global battery market. With production set to commence in 2027, the facility will play a pivotal role in advancing India's EV and energy storage industries, while contributing to the nation's economic growth and technological progress.

Who’s to blame if you were served a greasy cup of “soapy soup” in a tapsilog joint? Is it the dishwasher who treats the grease like a decorative fixture? The waiter who delivered it with a straight face? The chef who doesn’t care? Or the manager who’s watching a YouTube video while on duty?
