On a quiet block of Manhattan's Upper East Side, behind the preserved facade of an 1880s brownstone, curator Ashlee Harrison has created a unique space that redefines the way collectible design and art are experienced. After nearly a decade helping establish the U.S. presence of Carpenters Workshop Gallery and serving as Curatorial Director for Design Miami, Harrison stepped away from conventional formats to launch Thirty8East, a private, appointment-only space where collectors, advisors, and decorators can connect with the work in a more personal and experiential way.
The entrance to Thirty8East is unassuming, with generic stairs leading up to the second-floor parlor entrance. However, once inside, the beauty of the space becomes apparent. The original hardware of the 1880s townhouse, which has been maintained by the same family for generations, serves as a stunning backdrop for the transient works installed for shows. The placement of the art and the light that illuminates it enhance the visitor's experience, creating a sense of intimacy and focus.
Harrison's model at Thirty8East is centered around highly curated installations in the brownstone's various living and entertaining spaces. Unlike traditional galleries or retail environments, the space shows fewer works with more context, encouraging people to spend time with the artworks. Harrison often guides visitors through the experience, providing insights and fostering dialogue.
The current presentation at Thirty8East, titled "Brute Force," explores themes of masculine force in design and art. This show, which closes at the end of March 2026, is a testament to Harrison's ability to curate thought-provoking exhibitions that challenge perceptions and spark conversation. At the center of "Brute Force" is a long-time friend of the space, Chilean artist Sebastian Errázuriz.
Errázuriz's work, known for its bold and provocative nature, is a perfect fit for the "Brute Force" theme. His pieces challenge viewers to question the boundaries of masculinity and the role of strength in both design and art. The exhibition's curation not only highlights the artist's work but also encourages visitors to engage with the broader cultural and societal implications of the themes presented.
Thirty8East is more than just a gallery; it is a salon of dialogues where collectors, artists, and enthusiasts can come together to explore and appreciate the nuances of design and art in a personal and immersive setting. Harrison's vision for the space has created a unique environment that fosters connection, reflection, and the exchange of ideas, setting it apart from traditional art institutions.
In an era where the art world is increasingly fragmented, Thirty8East stands as a beacon of curation and conversation. By offering a space where art is experienced in a more intimate and thoughtful manner, Harrison has redefined how collectible design and art are appreciated and appreciated, making Thirty8East a must-visit destination for those seeking a deeper understanding and engagement with the creative process.
