In a world where artificial intelligence is increasingly infiltrating every aspect of our lives, from entertainment to communication, the culinary realm has become another battleground for AI innovation. However, as a reporter delved into the world of AI-generated recipes, she discovered that the results were far from palatable.
Mia Mercado, a writer for The Cut, decided to test the waters of AI-generated recipes by attempting to cook and eat several dishes that were entirely created by AI. Her journey began with a TikTok video that showcased a recipe for cottage cheese breadsticks, which was entirely AI-made, including the voiceover, sound effects, and visuals. Mercado followed the instructions meticulously, but the outcome was far from what the AI had promised.
"After combining the blended cottage cheese with an egg and mozzarella, I added the optional (???) garlic powder, salt, and pepper," Mercado wrote. "The batter was loose, and my hopes were low. How would this pan of goop become twisted, bready sticks?" As it turned out, the AI's vision was not easily translatable into reality. The batter refused to hold its shape, and when Mercado attempted to twist it into sticks, three of them fell apart. The final product tasted like a weird omelet, and Mercado gave it a dismal rating of "0 out of 5 AI-generated thumbs."
TikTok commenters, who were presumably unaware that they were viewing an AI-generated recipe, were equally disappointed. One user wrote, "This mixture is too liquidy to form anything. Is an ingredient missing?" Another shared a photo of their attempt at the recipe, which looked like a melted blob, and commented, "Ummmm... that's how mine looked when I started cooking it."
Despite the failures in the kitchen, Mercado persevered and tried another AI-generated recipe, this time for spicy buffalo chickpea wraps. Fortunately, this one turned out to be more successful, with Mercado describing the taste as "surprisingly good." However, the experience left her with a sense of unease about the direction of AI in food.
The AI industry and its legions of enthusiasts are eager to push AI-generated content into every corner of our lives, but Mercado's experience highlights the limitations of AI in the culinary realm. While AI can create visually stunning and engaging content, translating that into a real-world, edible experience is another matter altogether.
As we continue to embrace AI in various aspects of our lives, it's important to remember that not everything AI creates is a perfect reflection of reality. In the case of AI-generated recipes, the journey from the digital world to the physical realm can be fraught with challenges, resulting in dishes that are more akin to "literal AI slop" than something that would be created by a human chef.
Mercado's story serves as a cautionary tale about the potential pitfalls of relying too heavily on AI to create experiences that are meant to be enjoyed by humans. While AI has the potential to revolutionize many industries, it's crucial to approach it with a healthy dose of skepticism and to question whether it's truly the best tool for every task. In the end, the taste of AI-generated food may be more of a stomach-churning experience than something that will leave us craving more.
