300 sheep were successfully evacuated from a hay shed engulfed in flames in Banbridge, County Down, as firefighters battled the blaze that erupted on Thursday evening. The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) reported the fire was ongoing on Friday morning, with operations expected to continue for some time. The incident occurred at a property on Cascum Road, south of the town, and was first reported at 9:03 p.m. on Thursday.

Over 40 firefighters and six fire engines were deployed to the scene, working tirelessly to extinguish the fire. The NIFRS Large Animal Rescue Team, based in Newcastle, County Down, played a crucial role in the operation, leading the 300 sheep to safety. The team's swift actions ensured that the animals were not endangered by the rapidly spreading flames.

The fire was fueled by hay stored in the shed, and efforts were made to remove the burning material using a telehandler. This helped in containing the blaze and reducing the risk of it spreading to other structures. Despite the challenges posed by the large volume of hay, the firefighters managed to bring the situation under control, albeit temporarily.

This is not the first time the NIFRS has been involved in animal rescues. In early March, firefighters were called to a farm in County Fermanagh to save two calves trapped in a slurry pit. Emergency services attended the scene on the Belturbet Road in Derrylin around 7:00 p.m., with two appliances and two specialist rescue teams dispatched from the Lisnaskea Fire Station.

The NIFRS's ability to adapt and respond to various emergencies, including animal rescues, highlights the versatility and dedication of the service. These incidents underscore the importance of preparedness and the need for specialized teams to handle unique situations that arise in rural communities.

As the firefighting operations continue, local residents and farmers are keeping a close eye on the situation. While the immediate threat to the animals has been averted, the ongoing efforts to extinguish the fire are crucial to preventing any further damage to the property and the surrounding area.

In recent years, hay fires have become increasingly common in Northern Ireland, driven by factors such as prolonged dry spells and inadequate fire safety measures. This latest incident serves as a reminder of the potential risks associated with storing large quantities of flammable materials like hay. Farmers and authorities must work together to implement stricter safety protocols and invest in better fire prevention measures to minimize the risk of such incidents in the future.

Despite the challenges posed by the fire, the successful evacuation of the sheep stands as a testament to the NIFRS's expertise and the teamwork of the firefighters involved. Their quick thinking and efficient response have prevented a potential tragedy and highlighted the critical role that emergency services play in safeguarding both human and animal lives in rural communities.
